Example of why you should never sell your founder shares: Third Apple Co-Founder

By in Founder, Thoughts

http://www.businessinsider.com/apples-third-co-founder-sold-his-10-stake-for-…

“Street value of that 10% stake today: $35 billion.”

Very good reason to think about what you are selling and the value it could be later. Really sometimes you should just leave something that is only worth 800 dollars as it really wasn’t life changing.

What is "the cloud"? Even the big tech CEO’s can’t agree

By in Cloud, IT, Thoughts

http://www.forbes.com/sites/sap/2011/09/06/larry-ellison-and-marc-benioff-just-cant-agree-what-is-the-cloud/

What I find very interesting about this is that these guys are heading companies that literally are working on “the cloud” every day. In realistic terms let’s just say the cloud is “services powered by the internet” for right now as it is not even defined yet! I love this statement:

“The Benioff-Ellison dispute, while entertaining or at least diverting to those inside the industry, could be confusing and even frustrating for enterprise customers who’ve been struggling to separate myth from reality and jargon from tangible value in the cloud wars that the two high-profile execs are stoking up.”

Think your confused? So is everybody else…

(PS: this post was brought to you via very large tubes of data AKA the internet AKA the cloud)

Will our kids need a university degree to have financial security?

Very interesting article about the computer information age and how it is changing the work landscape forever. Great quote from David Autor (MIT):

“the main effect of automation in the computer era is not that it destroys blue-collar jobs but that it destroys any job that can be reduced to a routine”

funny exchange between accounting and engineer

By in Thoughts

Accounting:

Last thing – now that I could see the receipts. For your car rental, you put $24.37 rather than $246.37. I thought it looked funny when I first saw it, but thought you must have gotten some amazing deal. I’ve corrected it now on my end and your total reimbursement is $XXXX.XX.

Engineer Reply:

Wow… 6 years of advanced statistics and computation theory and I get taken out by a decimal place.  That is absolutely amazing!  Thanks a million for catching my mistake(s) AGAIN AND AGAIN.

Can ex-Microsoft employees make great entrepreneurs?

By in Founder, Software, Thoughts

http://www.geekwire.com/2011/exmicrosoft-employees-great-entrepreneurs

Very interesting insight on the MS machine and what the current state it has. One thing that really was overlooked is that many of the technical people at Microsoft are very entrepreneur oriented but are caught up in the management and politics now.

Servers are like money, you’ll always need more

By in Cloud, Founder

Jason Waxman from Intel is right with the current growth that is going on with servers. What will be the real thing to look at is how much of it is cloud computing. With the industry analyst saying that there is only about 4% of the computers in the world dedicated to cloud computing there is a huge potential for massive growth when all of the applications behind the firewall start moving in droves to the cloud.
